Meru Enhances Guest Management Offering with Acquisition of Identity Networks

Meru has announced the acquisition of Identity Networks, who's guest management product is well known to Siracom customers. The Identity Networks product enhances Meru's offering in the areas of guest and device management.

Guest Management

The guest management solution enables the IT department to delegate the production of guest credentials to the people who invite the guests, it automates the process of notifying the guest of their credentials and manages the lifetime of the credentials (expiry). It also provides management tools to monitor and report on guest activity.

Create and Email guest credentials

People who need to create guest accounts are called guest sponsors. Sponsors log in to the guest sponsor portal, enter guest details and then the system creates guest credentials and access rights. Credentials are then printed or emailed / sms messaged to the guest. Guests then gain access via a captive portal. A self service kiosk and payment system is also available.

Device Management and Bring Your Own Device

There is also functionality for active directory users visiting with their own device. When an AD user connects to the network the captive portal redirects the browser to a provisioning server. Once the user is authenticated the provisioning server loads an app. on the user device. This app. autoconfigures corporate 802.1x settings on the device.

Once configured this enables the user to connect to the corporate network, using 802.1x / wpa2 every time they visit – without manual configuration.

Bradford Networks

For those wishing to take security a step further Siracom offers Bradford Networks. Bradford is a multivendor product supporting wired, wireless and vpn (as is Identity Manager)

Bradford takes network access control a step or two further managing the whole connection cycle for people and devices.

Bradford offers a comprehensive security solution including:

Access Control: Identity based access control, role based access control and device based access control

Endpoint Compliance: enabling policies that allow or prohibit access based on the security posture of the end device (patches/AV etc), and automates remediation

We are pleased to announce availability of the new AP1000i from Meru.

The AP1000i is a low cost enterprise grade access point available in single radio and dual radio versions. They are dual band 802.11a,b,g,n devices.

The AP1000i supports Meru’s single channel, virtual cell, virtual port technology. It can co-exist on the same controller as the AP300 but not cannot exist in the same virtual cell.

The AP1000i has internal antennas and a ceiling / wall mount system both similar to the AP320i. It has limited processing, QOS and air time fairness when compared with the the AP300 and so is not suitable for high client density, high throughput deployments, such as in the classroom environment where the AP300 excels. We therefore continue to recommend the AP300 in demanding multimedia deployments.

The AP1000i is ideal for low density applications and will enable Meru to accelerate its growth in vertical markets such as hospitality, retail, home worker, and enterprise.

Cut Leased Line Costs with Wireless WAN

Meru Provides 802.11n Wireless Infrastructure for NATO 60th Anniversary Summit

Over 5,000 world leaders, foreign ambassadors and international journalists at this year’s NATO summit in Strasbourg communicated using a wireless infrastructure provided by Meru Networks. The vendor was chosen because of its ability to handle a high density of users while delivering impeccable quality of service and complete reliability.

According to Serge Hervy, responsible for events at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the most urgent requirement for the summit’s wireless LAN was reliability – especially with such an unusually high density of users. The WLAN would have to support up to 4,500 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections, both on the internet and via an internal VPN. Complicating matters, only 4,000 square meters were dedicated for 2,000 journalists, and the delegations were scattered over the buildings of the summit, which created an obstacle for ubiquitous coverage.

Summit organizers had to choose between various third-generation “microcell” vendors and Meru Networks, a pioneering fourth-generation “virtual cell” vendor. Third-generation WLANs from legacy vendors use a microcell approach, which assigns different radio channels to many small, adjacent access point cells to ensure that no two APs use the same radio channel in the same place. This technique requires precise and time-consuming channel planning and AP power adjustments; it is also known to create problems with contention, co-channel interference and quality of service.

By contrast, Meru’s unique virtual-cell architecture selects a single channel for use by all access points enterprise-wide. Additional channels can be layered as more capacity is required. This approach removes co-channel interference, even with the volatile IEEE 802.11n standard, and eliminates the need for a detailed site survey at conception and during the WLAN’s lifecycle for adds/moves and changes.

“Meru’s fourth-generation virtual cell technology was the only solution on the market that could match the summit’s reliability and user-density needs,” explained Eric Thomas, director of operations, Altius.

Meru partner Altius deployed three Meru wireless LANs comprising a total of 80 access points and six controllers rented from Léni, a company specializing in high-tech equipment rental for big events. Six engineers were able to complete the ambitious deployment in less than two weeks. To guarantee bandwidth to every Wi-Fi user, the networks built of multiple virtual cells were configured to support both 802.11a/b/g, 802.11n and to offer a bandwidth greater than 1.6Gbps, making Meru’s platform the newest and fastest Wi-Fi enterprise solution on the market. Introducing slower clients can dramatically reduce the overall throughput of an access point; however, Meru's APs are embedded with an Airtime Fairness algorithm that provides equal access for all clients regardless of access methods (e.g., 802.11 a, b, g or n) or speed. In the 2009 Novarum report (“Enterprise 802.11n Wireless LAN Access Point Performance Benchmark”), both Cisco's and Aruba's airtime fairness degraded as client density increased; only Meru’s improved.

Meru Technical Demonstration Suite Enhancements

Siracom has added two new products to its Meru Technical Demonstration Suite:- RF Barrier, and Video Services Module.

Meru Networks RFBarrier™ uses patent-pending RF physical security to selectively block sensitive transmissions as they cross the enterprise perimeter. By placing a Meru Networks access point and the external RFBarrier antenna at the network edge, internal traffic is confined within the perimeter, making the network invisible to parking lot attackers and wardrivers.

Meru's Video Services Module (ViSM). 802.11n networks are inherently lossy. With most applications this does not matter, but with video, lost packets impact video quality. The module applies application-aware optimization techniques to web streaming and real-time multicast video ensuring that wireless projection, IPTV, event simulcast, videoconferencing, telepresence and video surveillance are delivered over 802.11n wireless at maximum quality.

Hamworthy Middle School chooses Meru wireless from Schoolcare

Hamworthy Middle School have recently deployed a Meru Networks 802.11n based wireless network and HP Procurve wired infrastructure to improve the delivery of learning resources to pupils in classrooms and around the school.

Previously the school’s network consisted of a Netgear and Dynamode based wired 100Mbps infrastructure with D-Link wireless access points. When initially deployed the school only had a small requirement for wireless infrastructure, allowing isolated teachers to login in the classroom on their laptops. This requirement quickly grew encompassing mobile classroom working with class groups wanting to make use of laptops to bring ICT into the classroom.

As the number of classroom laptops grew it quickly became evident that the existing wireless network was not up to the job, with long login times and file synchronisation latency causing network corruption and issues for other users logging on.

In May 2009 SchoolCare were approached to design and specify a network overhaul plan including both the wired and wireless networks employed within the school. The wired LAN was replaced with an HP Procurve infrastructure with a multi-gigabit backbone ensuring bottlenecks are kept to a minimum.

As experts in their field SchoolCare knew that the only answer to the wireless network issues was Meru. Having worked with Siracom and Meru for 3 years and with a large number of installations both large and small under their belt, SchoolCare knew that Meru could deliver the robust and reliable wireless infrastructure required to enable successful mobile working in the classroom.

Meru’s single channel architecture means that planning and deployment is very quick and easy, negating the need for complex and often expensive channel planning and surveying often required for other wireless systems from competitors.

SchoolCare presented Hamworthy with 2 Meru options; One based on an 802.11b/g technology and the second employing both 802.11b/g and 802.11n. Whilst the 802.11n infrastructure was more expensive that the 802.11b/g the school felt that given the size of the investment and also the investment on a multi-gigabit wired LAN it made sense to adopt the latest technology because it represented best value overall for the school.

The Network is based around a Meru 1000 series controller, a PhiHong 16 Port POE+ Managed Power Injector and 11 AP311 Access Points, ensuring the whole site is covered with 802.11n Wifi.

The dual radio AP311 access points mean that both 802.11n and 802.11b/g traffic is handled with ease with no detriment to either technology. This allowed the school to make full use of their recently supplied 802.11n laptop fleet as well as obtaining best value from their legacy 802.11g laptop fleet.

Mrs Helen Campbell ICT Manager for Hamworthy Middle School says “The Meru wireless system and new switches mean we can all (Staff and children) log on to the network and internet in less than 60 seconds. I took 34 children into the ICT Suite on day 1 of the new install and asked them all to log on at the same time. The last computer was logged on in 54 seconds. Even the children were amazed at the speed having been very used to waiting agonising minutes to get started.”

Previously logons were well over 5 minutes, with file synchronisation causing huge bottlenecks on the network. Now all laptops logon in under 1 minute and file synchronisation completes with not errors or speed impact on other clients.

Wellington Primary School chooses Meru from Netsymphony

Students at Hounslow’s Wellington Primary School can now experience high‐speed, uninterrupted WiFi access thanks to NETSymphony’s recent installation of Meru Networks' innovative Virtual Cell WLAN architecture.

Since the implementation of the new system at the West London school all pupils are now able to connect to the internet from anywhere in the school, and experience a rich, fully interactive experience without interference from their neighbours.

The school had previously used stand‐alone Wi‐Fi access points to provide coverage, but it became clear that conventional WiFi could not provide full network access throughout the school, nor could it support high levels of connectivity when thirty or more pupils attempted to get online simultaneously at the start of a lesson.

"The features of the Meru system enable high numbers of students to be connected simultaneously" said Adam Pearce, IT infrastructure technician at Wellington Primary School. "The results we have achieved are impressive, pupils can even move from classroom to classroom without losing their network connection, something that just can’t be done with conventional WiFi systems."

NETSymphony, working in closely with networking distribution specialist, Siracom, installed a Meru wireless network, comprising 13 AP150 access points and an MC1015 controller. The solution was installed by two engineers in just two days with minimal disruption to pupils in the school.

“Schools have specific requirements when it comes to wireless networking” said Richard Coukham, Projects Director at NETSymphony. “The high density of users and the need to support many pupils logging in simultaneously at certain times of the day means that it is a very different networking challenge to that found in a commercial or industrial environment. The Meru single‐channel virtual cell architecture is the perfect solution.”

Meru's virtual cell architecture has all access points on the same radio channel, in contrast to the multiple radio channels used in conventional WiFi environments. With conventional systems each access point has to broadcast on a different channel than its neighbours. This means a lot of time must be spent surveying and planning the installation and can also mean that certain access points have to be attenuated to prevent them from interfering with an access point close by running on the same or an overlapping frequency.

Meru virtual cell architecture eliminates the need for this level of planning and eliminates interference between access points, making network management and expansion simpler. More importantly, the network can be extended easily; additional capacity or coverage can be added at any time simply by plugging in a new access point.

Costello Technology College chooses Meru from Vissensa

Costello Technology College has chosen a Meru wireless network to enable its vision for the wireless delivery of education across their Basingstoke campus. The solution was supplied by educational ICT specialist Vissensa in conjunction with Siracom.

The network, based around Meru's 4000 series controller, and a mixture of 802.11n capable AP320s and 802.11g AP201s was chosen after Vissensa demonstrated that the Meru equipment overcame the performance issues that Costello had experienced with wireless networks, in particular reducing "whole class" login times from twenty minutes to just over a minute.

The Tests

An MC-3000 controller from Meru Networks was installed onto the core Costello network and an AP-320 deployed to a science classroom, to enable whole class log-in tests for laptops from a Costello laptop trolley.

The laptop trolley holds sixteen RM MobileONE 945 laptops. These are Core Duo 2000 machines with 512M RAM, running windows XP, and using Intel 3945 802.11 a/bg network interface cards. All 16 laptops were used. Tests were carried out using 802.11g.

Live Environment Testing

The system was left installed at the college for testing in the live environment. A class of students were asked to test times for simultaneous login.The average login time was 45.5 seconds. The maximum was 150 seconds.The test was repeated and achieved an average login time of 33 seconds with maximum login time of 91 seconds was achieved.

The results of these tests are difficult to fully interpret as the profile sizes were variable, and there is no control of background tasks occurring in parallel to the log-in. (background tasks include software upgrades). The live test however compared favourably with the existing wireless deployment which failed to deliver whole class log-in in twenty minutes.

Controlled Testing

For test purposes clean roaming profiles were created, and the laptops were upgraded to ensure that a standard log-in occurred without down load of updates. Simultaneous login of sixteen laptops was timed. The tests were repeated, with each “user” logging in at a different machine, to ensure that profile information was not cached.

Average results between the two tests were as follows:

Meru Success Story - Warren Park and Agile ICT

Warren Park Primary School has deployed an 802.11g WLAN solution from Meru Networks to provide flexible and quick networking for its pupils, maximising teaching time and saving time for staff. The solution was supplied by IT specialist Agile IT and Meru distributor Siracom.

The school, in Havant, Hampshire, has installed Meru’s 1015 Controller and multiple Meru AP201 access points to enable its 420 pupils aged 4 to 11 to have seamless wireless access to the Internet from their classrooms.

The Meru solution was chosen as it overcame the problems encountered with the school’s previous WiFi equipment, such as wireless channel conflicts, poor response in wireless classrooms where a high number of users connect simultaneously to an access point, and having to frequently reboot access points when the network signal was lost.

Lee Combes, ICT manager for Warren Park Primary School, said: “The new Meru solution has, so far, been absolutely fantastic. Not only has it enabled us to get a full classroom of 30 online at once without disruption, but it has saved me a great deal of time as I no longer have had to run around rebooting the access points every morning. And if at any point I do need to do any system management I can do it from my desk - which is a lot easier and less time consuming, allowing me to spend more time on other important tasks. “We chose Meru’s system over competitors’ as it was cost-effective and met all our specific requirements; it was the best solution for us. Siracom were very helpful in ensuring the equipment was all set to work and the system has been extremely easy to set up as it virtually configures itself and there haven’t

been any problems to date. Even after the long Easter break, where the old system would have needed rebooting, the Meru system has continued to run seamlessly.”

Meru's wireless technology allows all access points to use the same channel. This eliminates channel interference and the need for channel planning, significantly simplifying planning and deployment of the network. The technology also enables highly efficient contention and even distribution of bandwidth between clients. This ensures that whole classes of users can

work at the same time without degradation of performance, and significantlyreduces log-in times; in some installations by a factor of ten.

In addition, laptop synchronisation with back-end servers previously caused network congestion, prevented other users from logging on and working. With Meru this is no longer an issue: every user is able to logon and synchronise without compromising other people’s ability to work. The Meru solution, which was deployed at the end of March, is currently being introduced to the school’s pupils in stages. Warren Park is looking to get all 420 pupils wirelessly enabled with the new solution in the coming months.

Zultys Success Story - SA Law and 500 Ltd

SA Law, the Hertfordshire-based law firm, has deployed a unified Communications System from Zultys. The Zultys system was installed by 500 Limited, in conjunction with Zultys’ UK distributor, Siracom. SA Law chose to install Zultys’ MX250 IP PBX to improve business efficiency, to provide better communications between its staff and customers and to reduce the on going telephony service and system support costs.

The Zultys system provides all the telephony functionality that SA Law hasbecome used to with their existing PBX, and adds many advanced features that improve productivity, manageability and system resilience. Key for SA Law were the integration of telephony functions, voice mail and fax viewing with its desktop applications, such as contacts, e-mail and instant messaging.

The company’s circa 70 staff have been equipped with Aastra 53i SIP handsets, and all users run the Zultys unified communications client, MXIE, on their desktop computers. MXIE integrates telephony and voicemail with other communications media including fax, call recording, instant messaging and Microsoft Exchange, enabling Outlook contacts to be used for dialling, incoming call details to be screen-popped, and Outlook e-mail to be used as a repository for voice mail, fax and recorded calls. The installation of the system was phased and planned by 500 Limited and Siracom to minimise disruption, with any installation tasks that could affect users taking place outside office hours over a single weekend day. User training took place before the changeover with the system going live the following Monday. As a result, SA Law had no telephony downtime during the

Meru Success Story - Sir James Smith Community School and VSL

Sir James Smith's Community School in Cornwall has deployed an 802.11g WLAN solution from Meru Networks to enhance learning for pupils and improve overall network performance. The solution was supplied by specialist reseller VSL, in conjunction with Meru UK distributor, Siracom.

The school, in Camelford, has deployed Meru’s MC1000 Controller and 25 Meru AP200 access points to serve the needs of its 600 pupils, aged 11 to 16.

The Meru solution was chosen because it overcame problems that the school had encountered with WiFi equipment from other vendors, such as wireless channel conflicts, and poor response in wireless class environments, where high numbers of users connect simultaneously to an access point.

Firetide Case Study - Sunlight Service Group

When The Sunlight Service Group Ltd planned the deployment of a new enterprise resource planning system the age and construction of some of the 106 year old company’s laundry

plants proved to be an unexpected barrier to installation. Faced with significant requirements for services in areas where no data infrastructure previously existed, they researched solutions based on new technology rather embark on costly, time consuming and disruptive cabling.

So far Firetide networks have already been deployed at four Sunlight sites requiring between

Each mesh node has four Ethernet ports for connecting network devices. Sunlight have

deployed bar code scanners, printers, and thin client terminals. The mesh proved effective for

office and business users as well as laundry-specific applications.

“The Firetide mesh fully integrates with our wired networks. We purchase wireless mesh

where cabling would be more costly, difficult, dangerous or too time-consuming to install. It

is also useful for temporary locations or if mobility is required,” Roberts said.
